Todays number is 999, it was on this day in 1937 that it was introduced as a way to save lives. This number still saves lives today in a number of areas around the world. In other parts of the world the number is different but serves the same purpose. 

999 is the emergency number in the United Kingdom and other countries. It was started in 1937 on June 30th after a fire killed 5 people almost two years earlier, which was followed by a government inquiry. This number has undoubtedly made it easier to contact emergency services.

While the United States made proposals for an emergency number in 1957. It wasnt until Februrary 1968, when the first ‘911’ call was made.
